Photopaddles were created by Steven Haulenbeek in moment of sheer brilliance, and silliness.
It was November 2008. Steven was at a friends house watching the presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. His friend and great host was serving up, some of the midwest's finest beers ever to be sold in packs of 30, as well as salty potato-based(?) snacks with two eyes and smiling mouth which were called, appropriately, "Smiles".
Just as McCain launched into a heated, cranky rebuttal, Steve held up a potato pancake, lined it up over the speaker's head and snapped a photo. Though the first photopaddle was most likely eaten, the idea lives on.
